Discovering Lisbon’s African Heritage

How about looking at colonial heritage and the African presence in Portugal from a different perspective?

Last December, members of the CONCILIARE project had the opportunity to participate in a decolonial tour in Lisbon conducted by Djuzé Neves and called “Discovering Lisbon’s African Heritage”.

This is an initiative developed by the Batoto Yetu Portugal Association, which aims to disseminate the city’s African character, usually scattered in a variety of visible and invisible memories and traces today.

The “migration” of African people has been a permanent element of Portugal’s History for centuries – whether based on free will, by force or by strength.

Through the concrete history of Moors, Muslim Africans, Arabs, and others who have long been present in the country, the activity shows how these populations have been a structural element of Portuguese urban life for a long time.
