In this globalized age of ours, what kinds of othernesses are museums building and multiplying?
That was the central discussion of the roundtable “Understanding Through Difference. The Museum and Otherness” held at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, Spain. Our colleague Emiliano Abad, from the University of Coimbra, took part in this activity and contributed to the debate.
Starting with the idea of “the Other” in the museum – the one who looks and observes, or the one that exists to be conquered and persuaded through narrative – the guests discussed the representation of the multiple otherness in museum spaces.
